14-year-old Keegan Groom, a hockey goalie from Wantagh, is raising funds for breast cancer awareness through the ‘October Saves’ program. As a goalie for the New York Aviators, Keegan’s efforts are personal; his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer three years ago.
“It’s tough some days, it’s hard to get out of bed,” says Kelly Groom, Keegan’s mother. Determined to help, Keegan joined ‘October Saves,’ where goalies receive pledges for each save they make in October. In his first year, he raised $10,000.
Keegan’s father, Rick Groom, recalls, “I remember his words very distinctly were ‘we have to do something more than just the pink tape this year.'” Kelly adds, “When he showed me his ‘October Saves’ page, and people were already donating, I cried…I couldn’t believe it, that I was so touched that other people were contributing to his cause.”
Keegan’s dedication is clear: “Before every game I would prepare myself – ‘this is for my mom,’ or ‘this is for other people like my mom.'” The ‘October Saves’ program has nearly a thousand goalies participating across the U.S. and Canada, from youth leagues to the NHL.
Support Keegan and goalies nationwide by donating to ‘October Saves.’ Every save makes a difference in the fight against breast cancer.
