11-year-old Ike Cole, a goalie for the Ashburn Extreme, is using his skills to raise money for cancer research through the October Saves program. Each save Ike makes on the ice turns into funds for a cause close to his heart.
Ike’s mother, Traci Cole, recently overcame breast and colon cancer. “Yeah, she just got cleared from cancer like a year ago. Made us feel really happy,” Ike shared. His efforts are dedicated to giving people like his mom a second chance at life.
Ike is one of over 1,000 goalies participating in October Saves, a non-profit founded by breast cancer survivor Lara Hopewell. The program began in 2014, raising around $30,000 in its first year, and now aims to exceed half a million dollars for women’s and pediatric cancer research.
“Every single shot he stops is raising money to help cancer awareness and to find that cure so the next person doesn’t have to go through what I went through, twice now,” says Traci Cole. Ike’s dedication has made him one of the top fundraisers, with nearly $4,500 pledged halfway through October.
Support Ike and goalies nationwide by donating to October Saves. Every save counts in the fight against cancer.
