Young Goalie Turns Every Save Into a Stand Against Cancer

Voyage New York shares Hunter Redden’s inspiring story, highlighting how one 11-year-old from Massachusetts is turning hockey into a force for hope. After losing a friend to cancer and watching both his mom and stepmom face life-threatening diagnoses, Hunter joined the October Saves Goalie Challenge, collecting pledges for every save he makes this October.

Our initiative transforms each save into more than just a play on the ice, it becomes a symbol of resilience, purpose and community support. Youth goalies like Hunter raise funds for cancer research, patient care and awareness, proving that even the youngest athletes can make a meaningful difference.

Through October Saves, participants also gain connection and encouragement from fellow goalies, donors and families who share similar experiences, helping them see the impact of their efforts firsthand. For Hunter, our program has offered not just a way to fundraise, but a source of healing, motivation and inspiration for himself and his community.

This season, Hunter and countless other goalies across North America are taking every shot on goal as a step toward hope, showing that courage and compassion can shine through every save.
