CEO Weekly recently featured October Saves in an article highlighting the organization’s remarkable growth and mission. The story explores how a small initiative in Virginia has blossomed into a continent-wide movement, uniting hockey players, families and cancer advocates under one shared goal: making every save count, on and off the ice.
What began with just 28 goalies from the Ashburn Xtreme has grown to thousands of participants across the U.S. and Canada. Every October, goalies take part in the Goalie Challenge, collecting pledges for every save made during games. The funds raised support cancer research, patient care programs and community screenings, while also inspiring young athletes to lead, give back and make a tangible difference in their communities.
October Saves goes beyond fundraising by connecting participants with the impact of their contributions. From visiting hospitals like the Inova Schar Cancer Institute to meeting NHL goaltenders, athletes gain firsthand insight into how their efforts are helping patients and advancing cancer treatment.
Since its launch, October Saves has raised more than $4.2 million, almost entirely through volunteer efforts. This remarkable support helps fund research, provide patient services and expand access to lifesaving care, all while developing the next generation of socially conscious leaders.
