October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and for 14-year-old goalie Lucas Marcaccio, every save he makes is more than a win, it’s a tribute. Inspired by his mom Julie, a breast cancer survivor, Lucas takes the ice each October in pink gear adorned with her name, raising funds and awareness through the October Saves Goalie Challenge.
Last season, his efforts helped raise $5,000 for cancer research, drawing support from teammates, opponents and the local community. Beyond the dollars, the experience has strengthened connections and built a sense of purpose for Lucas, teaching him that hockey can be a platform for hope and impact.
“Every save I make means more money for research,” Lucas says. “It’s my way of fighting cancer on and off the ice.” Julie adds, “Hope became something real in every dollar raised and every save Lucas made.”
This October, Lucas’ story reminds us that even small actions, whether on the ice or in our communities, can make a big difference.
